The Law Society of Hong Kong (LSHK) in every beginning of the Lunar New Year has an institutional tradition to celebrate, which provides a wonderful opportunity for their members and honourable guests among the industry to get together, especially in such rich spring vibe still pervading the city.
/ Visual inspiration and concept development
This year coincides with the change of the top management, Finch Atelier has collaborated with LSHK on an overarching visual design for their significant event.
The bright idea was inspired by Chinese Lantern Festival, also the date of their Spring Cocktail Reception, which is 12 February 2025, the fifteenth day of the first lunar month.
However, the challenge on the one hand was to integrate the heritage with relevance and correlation into a feasible idea but not too clichéd, on the other hand was the fatalistic connotations of the snake and its insidious impression could probably be an issue.
The favorable solutions are always finding a good balance among all those factors, as a result, the focus was on the colourful pastel lanterns and artfully let the snake that in simple graphic form just be a little highlight, blended into the whole overarching visual.
A series of hand-drawn lanterns, together with peach blossoms and auspicious clouds has been created eventually, and they became primary festive graphics components within the overarching visual. Besides, their flexible combinations can befit major design applications like invitation card, social media, backdrops, etc.
This year LSHK Spring Cocktail Reception has returned to King Lung Heen modern Chinese restaurant in Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM), which is located in West Kowloon Cultural District.
To reinforce such grand and remarkable evening, we have utilized HKPM’s architectural feature — pantiles ceiling, transformed it into a spatial imagery pattern in order to enrich the overarching visual design.
/ The design of the entrance, window side and giant digital backdrops
In addition, we have also created 2 sets of traditional yet contemporary “Fai Chun” on the theme of giant panda with different illustration styles.
We slightly tweaked their existing “Bears of Law” to make them like a panda for the rectangular Fai Chun set, and custom-designed a set of square Fai Chun with hand-drawn giant pandas, which has 2 iconic panda’s cute postures, eating and climbing.
The overarching visual design for the event is rooted in Chinese New Year traditions, it tells a fortunate story in the beginning of the year, and which has been reflected in the unconventional “law-related” propitious messages of those creative LSHK Fai Chun.
To a certain extent, the event was indeed a substantial and crucial brand building (Brand Engagement) for LSHK, particularly among their internal and the industry, even though the original purpose was just aimed at the cocktail reception itself.

/ President of The Law Society of Hong Kong, Mr Roden Tong Man-lung
In fact, maybe this evening was also a good branding exercise that has already revealed where LSHK may further explore for years too come.
